Our most triumphant gig, Kenny's Castaways, New York City - of all days, Election Day, 1984!  This show actually was a sell-out and was standing room only by the time we hit the stage with a very tight and powerful set of all-new material.  We ran out of songs (even after two encores) that we had to do a version of The Violent Femmes' "Blister In The Sun" out of sheer desperation!  A good night of music; we were paid well enough that it helped finance the upcoming E.P. and be rebooked on the spot for a Xmas show.  We were a three-piece by this time, as Joel Katz had left us to go to college.  It was a difficult loss, but we were a consistantly "working" band with recording sessions, shows and a rigorous rehearsal schedule; we wanted to keep moving forward and he would not be able to remain committed.

This was also the last time we would wear formal stage attire as we'd grown tired of faux-Mod; the identity crisis was over.  We were into Husker Du, The Minutemen, The Replacements and so on and wanted to join the present, more exciting real world.

The abandoned Rosebank train station in Staten Island.  Discontinued in 1953, these photos were taken in May, 1987.  At this time, I'd begun writing "Train Of Thought".  This was part of the old "South Beach" line.  The station was split in two by the street that it stood on either side of; hence the lyric "...broken station split in two, just like the soul of every man...".  It has since been demolished and houses now stand where the station once existed.  I'd also taken shots of the old Belair Road station as well, but these are sadly gone.  The picture on the left would have been the sleeve for the single, had "Train Of Thought" been released as the debut (as was originally intended).

The awful '90's. Taken around the time I left Smile.  Was there a prerequisite to have a pseudo-beatnik beard in the post-grunge world?  Fuck!
